Our Story

Our Mum and Dad had been married for over sixty years when Dad passed away. They had been enjoying life in a retirement village, where they’d lived for two years. Although they were friendly with a few of their neighbours, Mum became very lonely. She loved our visits on the weekend, but felt bored and isolated during the week. We were all working full-time which made it difficult to find the time to visit more often.

We also noticed that some residents in the retirement village had no family, and hardly any visitors. They didn’t seem to have the confidence to attend the group activities on offer either.

Loneliness in old age is a problem for many. Most of us enjoy one on one conversations; it’s comforting to have someone to chat to. The reality is, however, that residents in aged care facilities may choose to stay in their rooms and only see others at meal times. Staff offer personal care but don’t have time for good old-fashioned companionship.

This is why we decided to start visiting residents in care facilities or retirement villages on a regular basis, to give them some individual attention.
